Old Fashioned Apple Crisp is a classic apple dessert where apples are baked underneath a flour, melted butter, sugar and oat crumble topping. It's best served warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Ingredients

  • 5 medium apples peeled, cored and thinly sliced
  • cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 cup all purpose flour
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • cup old fashioned oats
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 6 tablespoon melted butter

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350 and spray an 8x8 baking dish with nonstick spray
  • In a medium bowl, toss apples together with sugar, cinnamon nutmeg and vanilla.
  • In another medium bowl, whisk together flour, brown sugar, oats and salt. Add melted butter and stir until no lumps of flour remain.
  • Layer apples into the prepared baking dish. Spread the crisp mixture on top.
  • Bake for 55-60 minutes or until the crisp is golden brown.
  • Best served warm with vanilla ice cream.

Notes

Honeycrisp, Jonathan and other sweet/tart apples are great for baking. 
Substitutions - a 50/50 mix of whole wheat and all purpose flour can be used. Butter can be replaced with coconut oil or applesauce. Nutmeg can be omitted. Reduce the granulated sugar to ⅛ or ¼ a cup if you want to cut back on sweetness, or you are using sweeter apples.
