- 5 medium apples peeled, cored and thinly sliced
- ⅓ cup sugar
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- ½ teaspoon nutmeg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 1 cup all purpose flour
- ½ cup brown sugar
- ⅓ cup old fashioned oats
- 1 tsp salt
- 6 tablespoon melted butter
Preheat the oven to 350 and spray an 8x8 baking dish with nonstick spray
In a medium bowl, toss apples together with sugar, cinnamon nutmeg and vanilla.
In another medium bowl, whisk together flour, brown sugar, oats and salt. Add melted butter and stir until no lumps of flour remain.
Layer apples into the prepared baking dish. Spread the crisp mixture on top.
Bake for 55-60 minutes or until the crisp is golden brown.
Best served warm with vanilla ice cream.
Honeycrisp, Jonathan and other sweet/tart apples are great for baking.
Substitutions - a 50/50 mix of whole wheat and all purpose flour can be used. Butter can be replaced with coconut oil or applesauce. Nutmeg can be omitted. Reduce the granulated sugar to ⅛ or ¼ a cup if you want to cut back on sweetness, or you are using sweeter apples.
